Meet the Dogs of PADs

PADs is proud to present a total of 18 dogs in the PADs Program, all with proven, amazing detection qualities. As a group, the dogs maintain an accuracy rating (sensitivity and specificity) of 85% or higher in their ability to detect the associated odor of Parkinson’s Disease.

Meet Bendy

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, Bendy has sniffed out 25 unique PD samples, attended 273 training session rounds and 93 session days for a total of 552 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Bendy, age 3, is a Lagotto Romagnolo, a breed known for detecting truffles in Italy. Bendy, along with his finely-tuned nose, is owned and handled by John and Allison Moalli.

Meet Ella

Since joining PADs in January of 2017, Ella has sniffed out 157 unique PD samples, attended 1,039 training session rounds and 360 session days for a total of 1,449 exposures to PD-associated odor.


Ella, age 7, is a joyful, enthusiastic English Labrador Retriever with a reliable nose.  She makes quick work of her detection job and identifies her target odor with complete and total confidence. Ella is owned and handled by Katy Barsamian.

Meet Indiana Bones, or “Indy”

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, Indy has sniffed out 23 unique PD samples, attended 263 training session rounds and 91 session days for a total of 501 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Indy, age 2, is a 180 lb. English Mastiff that takes his job seriously, and when the vest goes on, the nose turns on, and he is ready to work. Indy is owned and handled by Sam and Sandy Johnston.

Meet Mia

Since joining PADs at the inception of the Program in March of 2016, Misa has sniffed out 171 unique PD samples, attended 1,596 training session rounds and 454 session days for a total of 2,616 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Mia, age 10, is a Standard Poodle with the distinction of being one of the first dogs to detect an odor associated with Parkinson’s Disease.  Mia is quite probably the first Standard Poodle to ever detect Parkinson’s-associated odor. Mia is owned and handled by Barbara Wright, who also owns and handles Sasha.

Meet Piglet

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, Piglet has sniffed out 22 unique PD samples, attended 180 training session rounds and 72 session days for a total of 420 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Piglet, age 3, is a mix of terrier and Shar Pei with a propensity for sniffing. In addition to his career at PADs, he works as a therapy dog at his owner’s clinical practice. Piglet is owned and handled by Dr. Mandy Gulla.

Meet Rowan

Since joining PADs at the inception of the Program in March of 2016, Rowan has sniffed out 178 unique PD samples, attended 1,587 training session rounds and 484 session days for a total of 2,545 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Rowan, age 11 is an independent, social and adventurous Golden Doodle with a nose for the hunt. At PADs, she is known as “Miss Butterfly” as she loves to woof a greeting to her many fans that come to observe her at work. Rowan is owned and handled by Carolyn Haugen.

Meet Russell

Since joining PADs in October of 2017, Russell has sniffed out 117 unique PD samples, attended 1,277 training session rounds and 429 session days for a total of 1,549 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Russell, age 10, is an extremely scent-focused dachshund and terrier mixed-breed rescue dog that simply loves his job. He also loves hogging the bed sheets at night.  Russell is owned and handled by Sarah Shorett.

Meet Scarlett

Since joining PADs in September of 2019, Scarlett has sniffed out 61 unique PD samples, attended 429 training session rounds and 151 session days for a total of 649 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Scarlett, age 4, is a red Standard Poodle with a super-charged nose for detection work and she rarely, if ever, misses identifying her target odor. Scarlett is handled and owned by Kat Rose.

Meet Suki

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, Suki has sniffed out 27 unique PD samples, attended 255 training session rounds and 87 session days for a total of 464 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Suki, age 3, is a highly motivated, eager-to-please, Australian Shepherd. Upon being introduced the sport detection training of K9 Nose Work, Suki discovered and unleashed her enthusiasm for sniffing out odor. In 2021, Suki refocused her drive for searching out a trained target odor for the benefit of research for early detection of Parkinson’s Disease. Suki is owned and handled by Liz Pillow.

Meet Bubba

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, Bubba has sniffed out 22 unique PD samples, attended 181 training session rounds and 63 session days for a total of 372 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Bubba, age 9, is a rescue Basset Hound that goes into high drive when it comes to putting his nose to work. He often vocalizes his enthusiasm for the job, so there is never a question as to whether he is in attendance during a working session. Bubba is owned and handled by Leah McConnell.

Meet Hudson

Since joining PADs in January of 2017, Hudson has sniffed out 170 unique PD samples, attended 1,440 training session rounds and 493 session days for a total of 1,962 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Hudson, age 7, is a Hungarian Vizla, owned and handled by Judith Okulitch and Tim Kopet. At PADs, he has earned the handle of “Hurricane Hudson” for his signature whirlwind speed and accuracy.

Meet Jaden

Since joining PADs in September of 2019, Jaden has sniffed out 70 unique PD samples, attended 588 training session rounds and 204 session days for a total of 842 exposures to PD-associated odor.

Jaden, age 7, is an Australian Shepherd with a drive for using his nose to round up odor. When he is not at his detection job, he is busy training his human to retrieve a ball for him. He has owned and handled by Jack Bell.

Meet Penny

Since joining PADs in September of 2019, Penny has sniffed out 61 unique PD samples, attended 728 training session rounds and 250 session days for a total of 955 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Penny, age 5, is a miniature Schnauzer that loves anything or anyone playful, but she is all business when it comes to detection.  Penny is owned by Joanruth Baumann and Dick Coffey and handled by Dick.

Meet River

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, River has sniffed out 21 unique PD samples, attended 181 training session rounds and 62 session days for a total of 428 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

River, age 2, is a Standard Poodle with a thoughtful and discriminating nose. Though sometimes a bit shy around strangers, there is nothing shy about her ability to sniff out her target odor.  She is owned and handled by Alyssa Crawford.

Meet Rudi

Since joining PADs in October of 2017, Rudi has sniffed out 130 unique PD samples, attended 1,520 training session rounds and 487 session days for a total of 1,670 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Rudi, age 12, is a driven, focused Miniature Schnauzer with serious nose. Rudi takes his detection work so seriously that at PADs, he is known as Full-on Duty Rudi. Rudi is owned and handled by Bill Moore and Richard Lind.

Meet Sasha

Since joining PADs in October of 2017, Sasha has sniffed out 128 unique PD samples, attended 1,069 training session rounds and 366 session days for a total of 1,410 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Sasha, age 5, is a social, enthusiastic Standard Poodle with an above-standard nose. She has a unique style of alert in which upon identifying her target odor, she settles into a canine curtsy and then makes a circular motion with her nose. Sasha is owned and handled by Barbara Wright.

Meet Shugga

Since joining PADs in October of 2017, Shugga has sniffed out 122 unique PD samples, attended 881 training session rounds and 306 session days for a total of 1,193 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

 Shugga, age 11 is a “detection diva” Pomeranian with a super nose. She frequently sports a new outfit, and her entry to the detection facility comes with a high dose of sassy sauce and enough self-confidence to give Beyonce a run for her money.   Shugga is a member of the rescued animal family loved and cared for by her handler Amber Chenoweth.

Meet Velvet

Since joining PADs in September of 2021, Velvet has sniffed out 25 unique PD samples, attended 216 training session rounds and 74 session days for a total of 464 exposures to PD-associated odor.

 

Velvet, age 2, is a Doberman Pinscher with a busy brain and a nose for detection that is fulfilled by having a purpose at PADs. Velvet is owned and handled by Gabriella Russo.
